Wild Goose Chase

Today we will be covering a hot topic around the campus. (Enthusiastically) So lately, you may have been noticing green stuff popping up, and I don’t mean the spring time grass, I am talking about the geese or more specifically (pause) what they leave behind.
Many students have had concerns and complaints, about these waddling pests. Many of the concerns surround their (sound a hint disgusted) feces, them being in the way, or maybe even the fact that they could possibly attack you.
Some tips to prevent geese from feeling threatened and potentially attacking are (pause) not to feed them, touch them, or chase them. While some of these tips may seem obvious or common sense, they could prevent an attack from an angry goose.
So, what happens if you do get into a “goose chase”? First of all (pause) avoid all eye contact, stay calm cool and collected, do not turn your back to the goose and then slowly back away.
So! Keep these tips in mind, so the geese can live peacefully among us.  Just watch where you step! This is Elyse for the Lincoln Journal on the pulse.

Spring 2011 Fashion Trends

Spring 2011 Fashion Trends

Well, it’s about that time of year again. The time of year where heavy winter coats come off and the thin jackets go on, the time of year when closed toed shoes turn to peep toe and when dark colors turn to gorgeous pastels and bright colors, that’s right ladies, it’s spring time once again. Since it’s a new season us ladies must know what the latest fashion trends are so that we (and our wardrobes!) are all up to date.
Blast from the past, is the latest trend for spring 2011. The 70’s has arrived in full swing, with all of its bohemian flair and eccentric glamour. This trend has been popping up everywhere, with stars from Kourtney Kardashian rocking high wasted pants to Paris Hilton in oversized sun hats. The 70’s is definitely back… for this season anyways.
Horizontal, diagonal, vertical yes, that’s right stripes are totally in for this season! Theresa Ulrich, a makeup, fashion, and vlogger [video blogger] on youtube [her youtube channel is juicytuesday] has been doing a promotion with Winners, which is a form of Marshall’s and TJ Maxx, has been doing mini videos showing the latest spring trends, one trend this season of course is stripes. Theresa says that while normally horizontal stripes can be unflattering there are ways to counteract it. By adding pinstriped pants to your wardrobe you can pull off the stripes subtlety. She says that with a pair of pinstripe pants the stripes “are going to lean you out more, plus the stripes are going to give the illusion of you looking smaller than you actually are.”  Wearing stripes under solids is a must. Holding up a black and white strapless striped dress with ruffles at the top, Ulrich suggests adding a bright colored coat over the top; in this case she pulled a bright orange coat with black toggles on the front. Back to the black and white striped dress, she says with a dress like this she suggests that you can belt it to synch your waist and accentuate it. It can be worn with flip flops heels flats, she says. Now, If you were daring you could even, “wear it lower on your waist with a baggier shirt and use it as a skirt” horizontal stripes, on a t-shirt “will make your bust look bigger and your legs looks smaller” which is definitely a plus.  Diagonal stripes will help to make you look “leaner, slimmer and longer than if you were wearing stripes that go straight across because those can build you up a bit. So if you are concerned with your weight at all look for stripes that are diagonal or going pin striped down” says Ulrich. So Ladies, stripes it is this season. With these tips in mind go out and find yourself some stripes.

·                    So, lets talk shoes, one big thing about this spring is that the kitten heel is back, which is great for those of us who have an extremely difficult time teetering around in those four inch Louboutins! Kitten heels that have a heel, typically 2 inches or less; kitten heels don’t have a very good reputation. In fact many women refer to them as “the ugly step-sister of the heel family.” Kitten heels were mainly popular in the 50’s and 60’s; many stars such as Audrey Hepburn popularized this type of shoe. According to Fashionising.com the kitten heel are supposed to look dainty, yet sophisticated. That means kitten heels with pointed toes are preferable. The shoe should have feminine details like bows, and the desired look that will work for both modern and retro inspired ensembles; you are advised to go for pairs that are relatively neutral and simple.
Another shoe trend this spring is the platform, or rather “flatform.” A flatform shoe is a mix between a flat shoe, such as a pair of sneakers, and a platform heel. This trend was spotted all over the runway during NYC’s fashion week. The shoe will give you the height that you want, but will definitely be a lot more comfortable, which is an awesome thing for those who love the look but hate the pain of high heels. While this trend is just starting out, it is destined to be a big one this year so, keep an eye out!
Now, you want to paint your nails a “springy color” and you’re not sure what to choose. What colors are hot for this spring? This season “moon manicures” are the new thing they give your nails a retro feel. The trick to “nailing” this trend is having a neutral base, like a cream color and at the base of your nail creating a sort of half moon in black, a nail pen would probably be ideal in helping you with this. Another hot nail trend this season is metallic. Metallic was hot last summer and it’s seemingly making a comeback. Try giving your nails a gold sheen and if you like try O.P.I.’s “Black Shatter” which creates a shatter effect on your nails. It’s that perfect mix between girly and punk. Pop art nails are all the rage as well seen at such fashion shows like Betsey Johnson and Alice + Olivia. Seen at Alice + Olivia was a bright colored nail with white polka dots, Hot! Also try graphics and nail decals, which you can get at your local drugstore or any beauty supply store (Sally’s, Sephora, or Ulta.) On the opposite end of the spectrum neutrals are also really big. This season’s nail trend is either about being bold and bright or soft and sweet.

Makeup what’s hot for makeup? Is the cat eye back? How about bright eyeshadows or the smoky eye? Well as for eyes lips and even nails, coral is a major color this season. A gorgeous color, coral is the essence of spring/summer. With its pink and orange tones to it, it is the perfect color for any skin tone! As for eye liner try a violet one, this look is best suited for those with a brown eye. Fuchsia cheeks are back as well. Too give yourself that pinkish plum glow try a fuchsia color, it’s all about colorful cheeks this season. Super pigmented pinks are a must on your lips and nails also. For this look try Dolce & Gabbana; The Lipgloss in Bon Bon, $29. And of course the smoky eye is still here. Now try your smoky eye in different hues, dark blues or a rich plum color. For a plum eye try Chanel Ombres Perlees de Chanel Eyeshadow Palette, $65, available at Chanel and Chanel counters.
Now that you know the hottest styles, makeup and nail colors for this spring, go out and rock it gorgeous!

Movie Review: Battle: Los Angeles- Journalism

Review for Battle: Los Angeles
2.5 stars out of 5

Battle: Los Angeles was a film about a Marine who was just about to end his career with retirement when a frantic call comes in and he is shipped off to duty. He and his platoon, and with the help of a few surviving citizens, take back Los Angeles after an invasion of Alien predators. The film is essentially good vs. evil. The marines protecting the citizens are the good and the aliens are evil. The aliens are trying to wipe out the world in order to get the earths water, water is there fuel. The genre of Battle: Los Angeles is sci-fi, action, and thriller. The main actors were Aaron Eckhart who played SSgt. Michael Nantz, Ramon Rodriguez who played 2nd Lt. William Martinez, and   Corey Hardrict who played Cpl. Jason Lockett. The movie was decent it had realistic elements but at times the camera was very shaky and made some audience members get up and leave for a little. The cameras shakiness could have been for a realistic element, to make the audience feel as if they were in the situation, however it could have been controlled a little better. The film did provoke emotion at some points, for example when a helicopter took off with a few wounded soldiers and then exploded in front of SSgt, Michael Nantz’s platoon and the four citizens. The ending to the movie wasn’t horrible but it never explained what happened to the rest of the world and the killed soldier’s families, which would have been somewhat important to some audience members.

The Connecticut Budget Dilemma (journalism)

Conn. — As Connecticut Residents may know our newly elected governor Dannel P. Malloy, has some big plans for the Nutmeg State. One hot topic is the state budget and what is going one with that. Over the next two years Malloy is going to attempt to get $2 billion in savings to balance the state’s budget.
According to Malloy’s senior advisor, Ron Occhiogrosso, $1 billion in saving is the ultimate goal for the budget. In order to balance the budget Malloy wants to increase taxes on income, sales, gasoline, cigarettes and alcohol. Malloy doesn’t seem to feel apologetic toward the proposed tax increases. In fact Malloy said, “It’s what’s right for my state, Connecticut would not be Connecticut if we cut $3.5 billion out of the budget. We are a strong, generous, hopeful people. We’d be taking $800 million out of education. You can’t do that in this state. You’d have to gouge the Medicaid system. You’d have to close 25 percent of the nursing homes. What do you do with people?”

Many Connecticut residents are very worried about what would happen if this proposed budget were actually to be passed. “The economy is still in bad shape. People still don’t have jobs and people still have families to take care of. Things are just going from bad to worse in this world…” said James Greene, a resident of Southington. What Greene said is true, many people are still struggling in this economy and things aren’t exactly looking up yet. Many if not most of Connecticut’s residents are truly hoping that the budget won’t be passed. Another Connecticut resident adds, “What positive outcomes will there be? Who is truly benefiting from this silly budget idea? I feel like this is just another downward spiral for our country. What’s next, Malloy taking money from our hard earned paychecks…?”

Recycling (for journalism)

Where Are The Recycling Bins at LCNE?

Southington Conn. -- When a prospective student comes to Lincoln College of New England, they may first notice all of the nature surrounding the college campus from the mountainous views to the trees and pond in the front, it is just breathtaking. LCNE looks like a quaint school that really values the environment, but one thing that may be overlooked is the fact that there are no recycling bins.
As a student takes a tour of the dorms they may notice that the only kind of place to put recyclables would be the trash, outside of the dorm complex, Palmisano, there are two very large dumpsters where all the trash and recyclables are places at the end of each day. In this day and age many people are very environmentally conscious so it is very surprising that it appears no one has made any kind of effort to place recycling receptacles around the campus. One residential student said that she tried to start recycling in the dorm last semester but the rest of the dorm mates didn’t like the idea and she also said that even the floors RA shunned her idea.

-More-
This semester Ellie, a residential student at LCNE has recently started to collect empty plastic bottles and metal cans in her room, so that she can eventually recycle them. She said that her roommates are open to the idea, which she is happy about since last semester recycling had been an issue in the same dorm. Ellie said that she plans to take the bottles and cans to the grocery store down the road at the end of every week and put them in the bottle and can return. Putting them in the return will also give the college student some extra cash for food [since there are no food services at this campus]. Ellie said, “Just me doing this little bit recycling isn’t going to do much, but I feel like it could be a step in the right direction.”
Ellie is right, recycling bottles and cans seems to be just the smallest effort that could be done here but it is a step in the right direction and seemingly more of an effort that the school has been doing thus far.

1st NYC trip of 2011

My boyfriend, Nikko, lived in NYC for quite some time and most of his family still lives there. We are also lucky enough to live about two hours away from NYC so we go there quite frequently. NY is pretty overwhelming at first and i will never get used to taking the subways (i have to beg Nikko to take the taxi haha) but he has been going with me to new york basically since the second week that we started dating so i have been going for about a year now. Every time i go i find something different and love when i recognize something from my last visit. New York is such a fascinating place full of noise, people (often crazy people haha), culture, trash, and fashion. I love New York!
Beatles Billboard!! Gotta love the Beatles :)

It happened to be Fashion week when we went,
Unfortunately we didn't plan ahead to go to a show :(

A taxi ride near times square!

Starbucks... my addiction!

Jamba Juice! I had it once in San Francisco, I highly recommend trying it!

Review of: Miss Dior Chérie Eau de Parfum Spray

Hey Guys! I recently was given this Dior Perfume for my one year anniversary with my boyfriend, Nikko. I LOVE this perfume. It is soo girly and fun. I would recommend this perfume to anyone who loves a nice girly scent. One thing is, i felt that it is a bit heavy so i wouldn't spray too much since it could overwhelm you and also smell VERY strong to nearby people. But overall this is one of my absolute favorite perfumes. Love love love it ;)

Geese invade School in the Dead of Winter

Southington Conn. -- -- Wild Canadian Geese have flocked the campus of Lincoln College of New England (formerly Briarwood). Students have been puzzled by the sudden increase in geese and their “droppings” since the weather is still extremely cold and hasn’t been showing any signs of warming up in the near future.
Commuters and residents alike have been concerned with the accumulation of goose droppings. “When I was walking back to my dorm, I almost stepped on some of the goose poop!” Marieme Ngom, a resident of the college, exclaimed. The evidence that the birds are at the college is clear, and officials have yet to say what they plan to do for the clean-up and removal of the droppings. This however is a main concern brought to the public’s attention by numerous students.
Jessica Sabatasso had a rather entertaining story about an encounter she had with a particular goose, “I was walking back to my dorm and there were a bunch of geese blocking the sidewalk.  They wouldn’t move” she reported, “I started to stomp at them, well; it was more of a shuffle stomp. Anyways, so I was stomping and most of the geese moved, except one, so I chased it, and it ran, squawking the whole way, angrily. Then it edged closer to the curb and its flipper slipped and he fell off the curb. He then squawked, chased and snapped at me then walked away.”
“They are cute to look at but their feces are… well abundant” said Rebecca Okraska, who also witnessed Sabatasso’s goose incident. Most students agree that the geese are more of an annoyance than something cute to look at. But nonetheless the geese are back from the south and it doesn’t look like they have any indication of going back soon.
